Stitched binnacle and cluster - FOR SALE

Postby Nick Sutton » Mon Feb 15, 2010 7:10 pm

Can you help a friend of mine who has one of the original hand stitched binnacles (before the Hills Precision tooled part was complete in late Jan 1981). The binnacle is ripped as shown on the attached photograph but there is no reason why the instrument cluster is not working.

Whats the best place to advertise this for sale?

I'll put any interested parties in touch with the seller.

Right here! - I have moved this to the "parts for sale section". If your friend wants to expand his market to the USA then DMC Talk, plus Ebay too if he really wants a quick sale, or at least get an idea of its value (with a high reserve).

Are you saying that this is an ultra rare part then? Like from an ultra-rare car?

Thanks for the speedy response.

We made a few stitched binnacles how many I can't recall - put together either by Lotus or CP Trim. All I can vouch is that the assembly was made pre mid January 1981 when the first parts (binnacle) came off tools we used production materials.

That all I know and really can't think of any way I can put an exact date on the assembly.

Thanks again

When I had my binnacle recovered 3 years ago, Gerry rooney from CP trim recovered it to this spec. He still had the original patterns from back when they first done them. The only difference is that I chose to fit the black plastic trim in (I had to cut, weld, and refinish it to fit as the vinyl thickness had left it too big). He also fitted my NOS seat covers.

Fascinating! He must have been involved in making the one shown. Was yours recovered in leather or Vinyl?

Do you know how many he made? Do you still have contact with him?

Really interesting information.

Hi Nick

I have alerted Chris Nicholson to this thread, him and Darren like anything rare and early.

Hence why they own 2 Pilot cars!

I see the cluster has done some miles, would it have been fitted to a pilot?

I'll try and find a little more about the pedigree of the binnacle but I know it'll be scant.

I was the first to have a binnacle re-trimmed by Gerry at Interior Trim in Belfast in about 2002. He has now retired and Simon has changed direction with the company, so they won't take on any more :(

Hi Nick,

He recovered it in vinyl which is an excellent match for texture of dash etc. He also had original patterns for the seats hanging up, he showed them to me.
I don't know how many he made and I phoned up recently to ask him to do another one for me but unfortunately as Martin said, he has left the company. I know someone who lives near him in Glengormley and meant to give him a call sometime. Robert Lamrock may know more.
I actually prefer the look of the originally stitched binnacle, it matches the centre console perfectly, but each to their own!
Gerry also retrimmed my rear 1/4 panels (part no's 110429 + 110428)

Another pic which shows the binnacle and centre console:
