Engine swap - B28F to B28E

Dan and I haven't decided what we're going to do with this engine yet, but the idea was mooted that Dan could take his Volvo bits back off my D engine, drop his Volvo engine into his car, and I could drop this Volvo engine into my car.

The question is - is it worth doing? There appears to be some debate about whether B28E engines put out 156bhp or 170bhp - wikipedia thinks 156bhp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_760#Volvo_760), as do most geeks online. If that's the case, then that extra compression of the B28E is only really liberating 6bhp more than I've got at the moment. (Although conceivably the B28E would make more than it's stock figures with the stainless exhaust).

Pros to swap:
More power - how much though is open to debate. 6bhp or 20bhp?

Cons of swapping:
Unknown engine (won't have seen it running as it will get pulled before we get there)
Possible impact on value of car - will buyers be put off by the engine swap?
The faff of physically changing it
Potential need for various new parts on engine to bring it up to health
Higher mileage on swapped engine (although at 58k this isnt such an issue, the unknown history is)

What do people think? I've got a nice running D engine in my car at the moment that puts out good power. Is it worth gambling on the swap?

But with high lift cams and the free flow exhaust could be putting out a little more than 157 ;)

Might need domed pistons though depending on what cams you went for

I found this info on the topic:

http://forums.turbobricks.com/archive/i ... 32404.html

Some fragments stood out:

The changes between the B28F & B28E

B28E High compression engine made to run on leaded fuel
Basic CIS injection next to No electronic

B28F Low compression engine made to run on unlead fuel
Basic CIS injection With extra electronic for the Lambda sond(computer module oxygen sensor and Frequency valve and micro switches) A catalytic converter and other emissions equipment

The Air-fuel control is different the intake manifold is slighty different there is a big difference in the fuel systems and compression ratio between the B28E&F

and

...There is a Delorean Garage in England that updates the Delorean B28F to a B28E....

I came across that thread on my travels too Rob! And I agree with John Lane's comments about dropping an Eagle 3.0 in instead - however on this side of the pond it's not really an option. If it was, that would definitely be a yes - do you want a more recent version of the same engine with more development and more power, which the D would probably had got anyway had it stayed in production? - UM, YES!

If it ain't broke don't fix it would be my opinion. Even if it added 40BHP to your car you'd still have a crap car that would be beaten off the lights by a Vauxhall Corsa.

Leave it alone and buy a kit car! ;) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0542356620

If I were to add my useless personal opinion it would be somewhere along the lines of my D being agile enough for the job. Also, it gives bystanders time to drewl.

But then I am only 80Kg and not 160 like some of our US owners (no pun intended here). Come on I just went on a 2400Km trip to Slovenia and back in a fully loaded Honda Insight that could barely get up to 150 km/h on the autobahn.

The delorean engine is really a volvo b27F lower compression as we know, the b28E is a B27E with larger oil ways (updated) there's a few more minor differences which are not so important and i cant be arsed to find out about.
As for originality you cannot tell the diference anyway, they are the same block and most log books dont have an engine number on them anyway, so who's to know.
Me personally i would only put an engine in if i know it runs, and iv done a few swaps :(
hope this helps TT
