Engine swap - B28F to B28E

Postby A Van » Tue Aug 03, 2010 8:54 pm

Lol Darren!! sounds like there could be a Geztec then.....my advice is to drive a DeLorean that's has the euro block in ie TT or Dan soon and see if you think the extra power is worth it

B28E High compression engine made to run on leaded fuel

This is a new one on me..... does the volvo engine not have hardened valve seats then??

Wwas unleaded the norm in this country or were new cars of the time still leaded in 1984?

as far as i know, all the prv's had hardened valve seats as they imported loads to the states and it wouldnt have been worth changine the manufacturing process to incorporate normal seats, and the states were using unleaded in the 70's.

anyway all this talk , just throw a 300bhp cossie engine in and be done with it :D

Its a maybe lol. Personally I would want to rebuild the engine and make it all shiny. That was my plan for 16327 at least, get a car that can keep up with modern traffic ;)

But in the short term just throw the distributor on and see how it goes..as Arran said if you want a fast car then buy a fast one

Why not Jez ! If you are after some more power this would be the easiest way to do so.
It is up to you if you fun factor over concourse originality and everyone is different.
The higher compression pistons would make a considerable difference in the running but as Tony said, for reliability it would be worth giving the engine a full strip and check over for reliability purposes.

At the original rolling road the car that had the highest HP had an oem volvo B28E block with standard exhaust and that had 154hp (if I remember right) compared to others that were about 137-140. (Ask Dan what his original rolling road result was for comparison considering that he has the performance exhaust on too).

If you do go ahead with the swap I am sure you could get some money back for your original block as it is a known running example.

Could you listen to the engine run before you remove it?

(PS DarrenC, have you got over your heart attack after hearing about NON-OEM Custom Dirty Second hand parts about to be fitted ;) )

Personally, I think (sometimes even before I type) at the end of the day, they are what they are. They don't really handle, steer, stop etc, etc that well, so the power seems a little irrelavant to some extent. If you wanna go fast, buy a 'fast car' & save the D, for the pose value.

I wouldn't bother really. The only reason I might swap mine over is I have a tiny weap on my crankshaft oil seal and I've not been in the valley of death and cleaned it out, but I can do all this with the spare engine without taking the D off the road. Also I can plate the brackets and bits while its sitting there too, and paint the rocker and timing chain covers, fit new rubber hoses behind the water pump, clean out the valley of death, do the tappets etc. Basicly a damn good service without taking the car off the road, then when the engine is perfect its just a days job to swap it.

If your bothered about keeping the original engine number, the plates are only riveted to the blocks, not stamped.... ;) Once swapped there is no way anyone could tell the difference apart from no frequency valve, but you don't have one on your car anyway gez.
